Recommendation N/A
Minutes: Superintendent White was not present at the meeting. Chief Operations Office Scott Lempe filled in for Superintendent White.
On November seventh and eighth, Sarasota County School District counselors and psychologists presented two free workshops for parents and educators to help them identify and respond to depression and self-destructive behavior in young people.
To reach a larger audience for this important topic, the Education Channel recorded the sessions presented at the workshops. Three sessions are airing as a half-hour program during the month of December. They are titled "Beyond Feeling Sad; Helping Kids in Crisis,"When Anger and Sadness Overtake Your Child; Identifying Signs of Depression" and "Is Your child at Risk of Suicide?"
The Education Channel is aired on Comcast Channel 20 and Verizon 33. Viewers can find the complete program guide using the link on the district website home page at http://www.sarasotacountyschools.net/
The Education Channel staff also recorded three additional sessions from the workshops. They are titled "Invasion of Privacy vs. Protecting Your Child; Parental Considerations for Internet Social Groups," "Behind Closed Doors: Cutting and Self-Injury Behaviors," and "Helping Your Child Bounce Back."
The additional workshop sessions, as well as the sessions being broadcast, are available on DVD by calling the Education Channel at 361-6355.
All school facilities will have their flags flying at half staff from dawn to dusk in recognition of the 70th anniversary of December 7 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

35. APPROVAL OF THE SUPERINTENDENT'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE PERIOD JULY THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011Description The Superintendent's Financial Statements for the months ending July 31, 2011, August 31, 2011, and September 30, 2011 do not reflect any unexpected trends for the first quarter of the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The negative trend in the General Fund will continue until approximately November when property taxes are received. However, the deficit will increase because of the budgeted decrease in fund balance in the General fund due to continuing State cuts and decreases in local revenue. The larger variance between 2012 and 2011 on the District's balance sheet at September 30, 2011 for accounts payable is as a result of the implementation of the Crosspointe software in August 2011. The District is now more appropriately reflecting our accounts payable liabilities and actual expenses in the period they are incurred rather than the period paid.
Recommendation That the Superintendent's Financial Statements for the period July through September, 2011, be approved as presented.

Minutes: Board member Carol Todd reminded the public that Friday, December 16, is the last day of school for the winter break and the students are out and for the public to drive carefully as we will have students walking, riding bicycles, skateboarding and enjoying their holidays.
Board member Shirley Brown stated there was an article in the paper about a 17 year old student who was not from Sarasota County that won the National Science Award. The student came up with a molecule that will attack a cancer cell. It can be distributed with laser or through pill form. A student from Out of Door Academy won the local award and she won as first runner up at the National Science Award because she came up with a program that reads mammograms more efficiently and more accurately than the radiologist did. These students are our future and when we invest in our students and we invest in our schools we are investing in our futures and hopefully what these two students have done will have a meaningful effect on our lives in the future and if not our lives then our children's lives.
Board member Jane Goodwin stated that this is the last Board meeting of the year and there are some wonderful productions taking place at Booker High School and Sarasota High School now that are very festive and have a holiday theme. Encouraged the public to get out and go and see some great entertainment. There are also a lot of programs in the elementary, middle and high schools. Encouraged the public to support our children, support our schools and to participate where possible. There is great community spirit. There are great parents behind every child in our school system.
